February 22, the 15th day of the lunar year, is part of the long celebration of Chinese New Year. That day is called the Festival of Lanterns. It was customary for everyone to construct a lantern and light it in the evening for an auspicious year ahead, before the family sat down to a sumptuous dinner.

We can't be bothered to make our own lanterns, but I certainly can buy some from that lovely shop of Chinese curios at Shopwise.
