Watched The Pale Horse. Quite a letdown despite the fact that I already knew about the character changes. In this DVD The Pale Horse is a quaint inn in Much Deeping named after a passage in Revelation 6:8, which refers to Death as riding a pale horse. The story begins with shots reminiscent of those in The Exorcist and then deteriorates because of two things:

1. It is always a bad idea for a writer who really knows nothing about witchcraft to use witchcraft as a backdrop for a murder story.

2. Most of the deaths in the story occur in the past, and so there is not much action in the present and a lot of verbal exposition. Even the final resolution relies on a series of flashbacks.

The only saving grace in this DVD is JJ Feild, who was fantastic in Death on the Nile. He has eyes as infinite as galaxies you would willingly get lost in. Love his silver armband.

I do love those two, subtle lap dissolves (in the brief interrogation scene and in the sum-up scene where the inspector reveals his having played a role in deceiving the culprit).

And, yes, I also love that scene in which the inspector picks up a telephone and says, "Outside line, please". That is a line I have not heard in a long, long time.
